Lightbulb Compressed natural Gas (CNG) ?

Has anyone ever looked into running their boat or car/truck on CNG? My research has shown you lose 10% fuel economy. But if you look at gasoline is at 3.83 a gallon (Buffalo, NY) and CNG is 1.99 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) and factor in the 10% loss in fuel economy that's 2.20 a gallon.

Any thoughts?

Also it looks like you can do a conversion for about $2500 for a 8cyl engine with tank and misc. parts

comes down to infrastructure, many utility companies run trucks on it, large rubbish companies that have land fills that produce NG use it. Similar to a propane conversion, An engine can be built to run on just about any combustible fluid, gas etc. It just comes down to what is convenient.

I would think you could get a bulk delivery and then fuel up at home. Another nice benefit.

Nat gas is not avail in bulk pressurized like propane. You have a fill "station" at your house that takes gas directly from the gas main. I used to repair them.

In the Buffalo area, you can buy cng from National Fuel. It is avalable at their Tonawanda Service center. I understand that you need special credit card. Call NFG and they can give you more details.

personally the thought of a can of CNG enclosed inside a boat is a little scary. i guess you could put it on the swim pad and disguise it as a beer keg...

Bigest drawback in a Boat would be fuel range. CNG is compressed to 2000psi or something like that. The cylinders needed are heavy(Welding style bottles) and don't hold alot of volume compared to gasoline.

It's one thing to have a city/utility truck with 3 cylinders in or maybe under the bed and a few close by filling stations to deal with the <300mile range.

Not to long ago I bought a Generac 454ci motor that was part of a generator system (with a 150 hours on it) to rebuild for a boat and it came with the Nat Gas carburetor and governor still attached.
