the engine might be interferance fit, that means when the timing belt broke the valves can come in contact with the pistons causing them to bend.im not familiar with your engine but a lot of engines are interferance fit.

This app is a 120 hp 4 banger ford marine app. it should have points and condenser. Make sure you have the correct points installed. If the spring / arm for them is too weak they will open up too far apart.

First you have to make sure all the timing marks are aligned and that engine has a shaft that turns the distributor so if you're off a tooth on that shaft the distributor..as for that engine being a interference engine out of the many that i have done and that have snapped none of them ever had valve issues with the piston hitting them.. the only 2.3 interferance model that ford had was the diesel one's back in the mid 80's..pull the cap and recheck your timing marks and make sure the dist is on #1..

Thanks for posting the updated fix. Back when I use to work on this engine many many years ago a lot times the no start or really bad idle and very poor throttle response seemed to be points & condenser related. many owners would have the wrong set up or improper gapped points and so on plus what I mentioned in post # 3. Anyways thanks for posting the fix, always like to know what happened after the fact.
