BUP,
Man that is a great Idea, then I wouldn't have to listen to the girlfriend complain about holding the belt on the top two pulleys.

Why thank you I have so many little things that I try to make the job easier for marine apps.

496 here is another one - We all know the impeller installment can be hard and time consuming. I know everyone wraps a tie wrap around them to help install them alot easier - but the easier install is to wrap 2 tie wraps around the impeller. Position the tie wraps - One at about 3/8 location and the other tie wrap at a tad past 3/4. Install impeller in housing and cut tie wraps as you go. Its like a 10 second install that way.

Really the best and fastest way to install these impellers or any impellers, if you have good access to the housing or the housing is in your hands - use a small engine piston ring installer tool. Been doing that way for 20 years now. It makes it a clean & fast install - 2 second job.

We use Glycerin for the internal impeller housing and on the impellers to prevent dry starts and for easier installment. Water base KY works great to. make sure you always use a water base form on impellers. Anyways just some added info.

Great tips BUP! Had a total failure of the stock sea water pump a couple years ago. On the St Croix, current against me, in the rain about 30 miles from the launch ramp. Not fun. I too put in the Hardin unit and kept the stock pulley. One of the best upgrades you can do for a 496.

Bama,
I was wondering if you could help since we have the same boat, I have a 04 27 496 ho and just got a Hardin gen 7 sea pump with the pulley. Did you have to remove anything besides the belt to get at the pump? Did you remove the pump and then get at the hoses? I put a sea strainer on that side so it is really tight getting to it. Any help would be great.
Thanks

Raising this from the dead............my HM pump bearing wore out and seals leaked after 63 hours...........Hardin Marine acknowledges the issue and the are now coming out with a beefed up gen 7 plus......apparently the regular gen 7 pump they make is weak and manufacturing was crap........when i just rebuilt my pump the circlips are bent, seals look like toast etc.

The circlips were bent? Did your pump have the hardin billet pulley or utilize the stock pulley?
