Default Starting Issues

Any ideas on this issues.. The motors run great . The problem is with starter engagement.
The motors are 502 GM and I have TRS Drives the starters are top mounted. The motors and starters are all new I swapped a starter once.
I have installed all new harness and grounds .
I have a ground to the block to the battery and a ground between the blocks too.
The starboard motor seems to act up much more then the port motor. It seems like a bad starter motor.
They spin but not engage the flywheel. After a few key turns the starter work like a champ every time. Sometimes it never an issue..

Any help would be great Thanks

153 or 168 tooth. I recently did a new install on some marine starters. Hi torque. Glad I cked for gear clearance otherwise I would have been pulling engines otherwise guessing at shims. One would not have engaged at all and the other would have been questionable but without a doubt the bendix gear wouldn't have retracted.

I've heard of some top mount starters actually even fly cutting (.050 plus) the starter mounting hole on bell housing just for full engagement but evidently some starters vary on how close they sit from flywheel ring gear. You definitely wanna confirm your getting full engagement or there abouts anyway.

I pretty sure they checked out all before we installed them in the boat.. it benched tested as a unit on the ground a few times with a jump box .. the starters seem to be disengaged as well ..

With a remote start switch ( or jumper wire) , jump from POS batt cable on starter to start terminal on starter solenoid. If starter engages properly , you have a voltage/amperage drop to / at / or from ignition switch. If it still engages slowly , its probably a chinese solenoid on starter. Good Luck!!! ( You can just jump across terminals with a screwdriver , but not the preferred method).

Sounds like a plan. I guess you can get a voltage drop from the key switch ?? ..
