the separation of the end caps can be many reasons.. Freeze break is the most common -

salt water corrosion over time

but when those 2 do not take place -- solder can just let go especially with copper content. Also heat and cooling cycles that does take place in the engine compartment. does not help solder out over the long haul.

Next is dissimilar metal corrosion. The contents of the solder and the metals of the cooler are all different.
