School me on the 28zx
So I'm in the market for a 28-30 ft twin engine boat and the 28zx is one of the boats I'm looking at. I know the boat had a change in mid 2000 with upper deck, what is the difference? Anyone got pics to show of the differences.
Also how is the handling on these boat, it would be my first stepped hull.
What are considered good price ranges to look in? I have also read that the newer upper decks are more, so how much more? What is resale like, ie do they sit forever or is there a pretty good market for them?
Any known issues?
Currently looking at Donzi 28zx, Scarab 29.5, Baja 29 outlaw, Formula 292. Anyone with experience in comparing these please speak up.

A friend of mine had one here in my marine, nice boat and good quality. I have seen many with minor gel issues, stress around the cleats and pretty much the whole ZX line had issues with where the fairings riser bonds to the deck. I have fixed many as well as the thirty eight I have and have not found anything structural. I ran my friends with 350 mags several times and got mid to high sixties out of it. Handeled fine and was fun to drive but felt small and light to me but still was a nice boat.

Here is a really good deal on a 29ft Formula. I know the old owner (it was a repo). Its missing the drives but otherwise is a really clean boat and was used in freshwater only...Great price IMO!

I've been waching that formula also, you can get a nice one with drives for 40ish, cpl OSO guys have bought in the high 30's latlely hours in the 200 range and together, any 292 around 40 sells anything above currently listed has been listed for 3 years or better

I looked at the 28zx but went 292 fastech. 28zx had a little smaller cabin, but are 3 to 4 mph faster with the 350 mag mpi's. Not many 28zx's in my area, drove 12hrs each way to look at one that turned out to be very ragged out. I never drove one. The 292 was an hour away and I knew the guy. I have read nothing but good on the 28zx.

I have a 2001 28 - its my first boat, and wished i had bought one a long time ago. The ride is awesome and looks great. Ive heard that the twin 350's get much better gas mileage than BBC's as well.
Dave is spot on, on the fairing. One side of mine is in need of repair (like shrinkage cracks in the gel). Also, along the trailing edge of the fairing, there are a couple of the same cracks.

I have posted before on how much I love our 2002 28ZX. great fuel economy for a twin engine boat and respectable speed (twin 350 mags consistant 71-72mph range, best 73.4 in the river). I prefer the newer 28ZX over the original, but I like the original too. The cabin is not the most glamourous but is okay, I think other makes put a little more detail in the cabins. Performance wise, the 28ZX handles great!
Cant go wrong with a Formula, great fit and finish. the Scarab has a narrower beam.
