28ZX questions...

In our (seemingly never-ending) boat search, we've come across a 1999 28ZX. Twin 350 Mags, claimed 300 hrs, claimed 74 mph top end, hydraulic steering, K-planes, etc. I read somewhere on here that Donzi made changes to the deck and/or hull on this boat in 2000 - if true, why? Are there handling or performance problems with pre-2000 hulls?

How is the ride on these boats with the 22 degree deadrise? We boat on a washing machine lake, and could get a little beat up on a rough day in our old 280 Powerquest, which is almost exactly the same size as the 28ZX.

Also, anyone know the weight on a 28ZX with twin small blocks? Broker has it list at $60K so it's a little overpriced, I think, but the market in Michigan is soft, especially in December....

Many thanks!

Shanghied! 2004 Donzi 33 ZX
Re: 28ZX questions...

Most of your problems on the 28ZX were pre 1998 when they had a single engine. 1998 was the beginning of the change twin engines with a responsive hull in 1999 the 26ZX was introduced the look was such a hit the 28ZX followed, plus it was cheaper for Donzi to design one deck for both boats. The 26 and 28 have the same cockpit area same beam. They are heavy boats and run well in rough water I have a 26ZX the 28 weighs 6500 dry around 7200 wet. Top speed is 70-72mph with 350 mags. my nephew owns a 1998 28ZX and loves his. Best of luck in your adventures.

Re: 28ZX questions...

I just purchased my '99 28zx this year and love it. 350 mags, k-planes, latham, bolstered rear seat, gps speedo. I went from a 24 checkmate and the difference is night and day. With 23p mirage plus it does 70.5 gps at 5050rpm, with 25p mirage plus about another mph at 4650rpm (note to self, get the 25s labbed). The guy that traded my 28 got an '04 33zx with the same exact graphics. Can't say enough good about the boat, so much sharper looking than those formulas and fountains. The only thing I'll be changing next year is to put the trim in the handle, it's currently in front of the throttles. Hey, Shang, do you remember me from Abay, we met on Saturday of the NE Donzi get together.

Re: 28ZX questions...

5PM, that sounds exactly like the boat we're looking at, only the graphics are different. Do you have a fresh water sink in the cabin?

Re: 28ZX questions...

Ours doesn't have the sink, but I do love the cooler under the rear seat. It's huge and I probably lose a mph with all the Ice, snacks, and beverages back there. Frank, we were actually introduced this year. My fiancee and I walked over from Hutchinson's (long a$$ walk) twice, once on Friday, (no one was there so we hung out at the bar). And then Saturday we came over and you, poodle, and a couple others were there.

Re: 28ZX questions...

Dockrocker,
Check out the Superboat Y2K, It's 30' at the waterline and 32' overall with the fiberglass swim platform. With a stock single 496, you''ll go 74mph+. And you can't beat the price or workmanship. Check out the thread from the last customer. Also look how the boats are built on Superbabi pics.

Re: 28ZX questions...

FX and DockRocker,

Superboat Y2K? We run with one of those and it's nice, but a definite niche day boat. They don't overnight on it, (no cabin), the whole back is fiberglass, no pad, and 74 is speedo, not GPS. You get to 28 - 30' and it's time for twins. The Donzi is alot more solid in rough water.

Cool Re: 28ZX questions...

5PM,
The Y2K has no cabin ? what planet are you from ? Here's some pics. The cabin sleeps 4 in comfort and can be custom configured any way you want. Starting at around 50k, you can't beat it. Finest glasswork imaginable.
