That was the reason for the "hook it to the standard pick-up hose that runs thru the transom" comment. No more holes in the hull.

I had a notched transom on the Pantera with a separate water speedo pick up. The speedo tube was drilled at least 6inches above the water line and the hose was just run longer. Tou definately don't want it going through the transom below the water line. Connect the pitot tube assembly to the tube that runs through the drive as said or for about the same $$$ as the pitot assembly, get a cheap handheld GPS.
