just taking a guess about the condensation but when you look at the pics it does make you wonder why the rust is only on the caps it does look like some type of moisture is sitting on the caps

Maybe somebody beat the caps into the bore instead of pressing?

you might be on to something, the u joints do have singapore on them, maybe they have been replaced before.
