Bravo xr broken shaft
Bought a boat with a 97 Bravo XR, the u-joint shaft snapped in half. Shouldnt it j\have broken the gears instsead of the shaft if it was over reved?
We are trying to figure out what happened.

I had one XR drive in for repair that had the shaft snapped in the coupler end where the o-ring is. When I opened up the upper housing there was also one tooth missing on one of the gears.
This was caused by a careless driver that didn't react when getting airborne.
Thanks to the shaft snapping the upper housing could still be used. Usually when a tooth snaps both the gears and the housing ends up in a mess most often resulting in the input shaft and gear stuck in the housing.

They didn't make XR's in 97, so the drive was a retrofit. Check and see if the gimbal bearing has a red dot on it. The old style was replaced with the XR and trim limit spacers were to be installed in the trim cylinders. If it has a red dot, it was changed and if the spacers were not installed the drive can be tilted up too far pinching the ujoints on the yoke causing it to crack. Look and see if there are marks on the yoke where the ujoints could have hit it if the angle is too much. I just installed a gimbal ring and it had a white dot on it, but it was just the bearing, not the upgrade kit.
That would cause a broken shaft without gear damage.. I would think,
Hope that helps.
