RESOLVED! Thank you OFFSHOREONLY.COM Folks!!! THIS SITE ROCKS!!
Thanks to High Cetane, and others who PMd me who assisted by providing pertinent details needed to confirm the issue for certain. Here are the details for future reference:
270T and 280PT transom shields ARE DEFINITELY 1" DEEPER than stock 270/280 units and therefore require a shaft housing that is also 1" longer than other 270/280 units. 270Ts were pretty rare to begin with, and most were hooked up to 4 and 6 cylinders with 1 piece housings. The few that were hooked up to v8s utilized a 2 piece flywheel cover/shaft housing combo with the flywheel portion either Ford or Chevy and shaft housing portion extended 1" and supplied by Holman Moody (I believe) with a 1" extended shaft inside as well. A standard housing will hook up but will not have enough spline overlap and the drive bellows will be stretched out and will likely fail soon.
I found the last extended housing and shaft setup on this planet and paid through the wazzoo for it but its on its way and it will enable my boating season to be a great one.
NOTE: I am not referring to the longer units that place the engine further forward for weight distribution... this 1" extension is specifically within the transom area.
BOTTOM LINE: Just remember if you have an early power trim unit you need an extended shaft housing for the deeper transom!
best of luck!
Jim

Jim-
Glad I was able to help you out. I'll take you up on a free beer someday...I have an account out in Gibsons, so trips to the left coast are pretty regular. Sorry the milk bottle wasnt cheap...but this hobby of ours beats Golf at any price.
Boat looks great....really like the color.
Good Luck-

I have a similar set as Jim's but my X-18 has this drive and a Chris Craft Q 350cu engine. My engine is mounted backwards running the Volvo drive off the front of the engine where the balancer would be. Why the Swedes & Chris Craft came up with this Idea ????????? And why Donzi from the factory used this combination, they must have got a really good deal ?????

Cool Jim! What lake is that? Reminds me of Lake Winnepsaukie where I grew up. I'm Southern Cal Santa Barbara area now. I'll take a few more pics of my Kona this weekend and post. All the pics I have are old from before the engine rebuild. Have a great weekend!
