Default Sportmaster 4 seal carrier, can I use RTV instead of a gasket on the base plate?

The manual calls for Gasket # 27-848835 to seal the base plate to the housing. When I removed mine to change over to the 4 seal unit for the drive shaft, there was no gasket, just a Whitesh/Gray sealer. I'm right in the middle of doing both lowers, can I use a sealer, or should I order and wait for the gaskets. Thanks...

CT? You have time for a gasket.

It's not so much the wait, but at my age, my memory to be able to put it back together, LOL...

I ordered a couple. After spending an hour cleaning up the goop that the engine builder used, I'm looking forward to gaskets, especially the next time it needs to come apart.
