What year model 22 do you have. I had an 03 and now have a 07. My 03 ( old body style) had a 496 ho with a bravo 1. The drive was mounted above the rub rail. The rub rail stopped against the sides of the upper drive. I ran a labbed 28 to 82mph with a light load of fuel and some chop on the lake. It always ran 80 mph even with 4 people. The 03 planed out terrible. I added some Dana fixed tabs but it still sucked with 4 people in the boat.
The 07 has a 496ho and a xr with a sport master that is 2" shorter. It also planes like crap. It runs 80 with a non labbed 28. The load does not seam to effect the new hull as much. I am building a forged bottom end whipple charged 496 ho as we speak. I am hoping for high 90s.
To finally try to answer your question, I think these hulls pick up speed with a shorter drive but, they suck to get on plane. I have a 2" drive spacer to try when I get the engine back in the boat. I will try it both ways and see if I lose any speed with 2" more drive in the water. I dont want to add tabs to this one.
Here is a pic of the back of the old Daytona. You can see if yours is mounted this high. I also tryed a planning fin on the drive that really helped low speed but, everyone told me they would not run it over about 80mph. I ran it to 82mph. I hope this helps.
