I'm looking at an 88 Stinger and there are 2 concerns that I have. There are spider cracks on the hull and there are also chunks of gelcoat missing on the bottom of the hull from the fins that run the length of the hull. You can see the yellow fiberglass showing from the missing spots. The current owner seems to think it's not a problem and he ran it for a while like this.

The boat is a good price and I'm looking at jumping on it, but I'm concerned about those issues. Any advice on the chunks missing?

TIA

I'm new to large powerboats and looking to purchase a used rig. I've come across a 97 Donzi 22 ZX, mechanically the boat looks nice, however it has one flaw that concerns me. The boat has a large number of hairline gelcoat cracks in the deck only (hull is near perfect). These cracks are spread all around the deck and are concentrated in a few areas. There is no evidence of impact so I have a feeling that this is a gelcoat issue caused during molding. My question is in your opinion should I avoid this boat, or is this merely cosmetic and worth just negotiating some money off the price? Could I fix this down the road if I wanted to improve the appearance? Any help is appreciated.

After removing both of my transom assembles, I had water coming out between of the transom layers on the SB side of SB cutout. The port side of the cutout appears dry, as does the remaining half of the transom. I tapped around the cutout with a claw hammer and the area in question sounds soft. It appears to be the lower 1/2 of the cutout on the 1 side. When tapping on the inside and outside of the transom around the cutout, it sounds solid, but I'm assuming that's a false test, since it obviously had water in there.

I think the next check is to drill some holes from the inside to check the extent. Is it possible to section in new wood in the bad area, and then some, providing I can get a good overlap with good wood, depending if the layers can be split?? I don't want to get into replacing the whole transom if it's not needed. This boat has a 10' beam, so I assume it has to be sectioned/overlapped anyways. Just not sure were joints are allowed, or what needs to be spanned in order to maintain the integrity.

I've read all the transom replacement threads here, but those all involve complete replacements.

Thanks

I'm in the middle of tearing out rotten stringers inside a 22 ft boat. There is a very heavy gelcoat build up inside of the boat that I want to get off but is turning out to be difficult with my grinder. I talked to a soda blaster and he said that the soda probably would not do a good job stripping the gelcoat. He recommended crushed glass blasting. Is there any issue with this, i.e. will having crushed glass residue in the boat have a negative effect on my laminations when I build it back up?

OK, my boat needs a face lift to go along with the power upgrades this winter. I have a pretty good idea what I want to do, just not sure how to do it?

The boat is all red(see public photo)and is painted with Imron paint. I want to add some gold graphics to match the truck on the transom and the 2 front points and a name on each side. The name will be in vinyl.

My questions are,
1. Do I draw it out on the boat then mask it off or do I mask everything then cut out what I want painted?

2. How do I prep the Imron on the boat for paint over?

3. How do I get a smooth transition from old paint to new after removing the mask?

4. Do I need a primer on the red before spraying the gold? I have some holes and chips that need to be filled and sanded out.

Thanks for any and all help!
