Both shops said that the drive is literally destroyed. Apparently a faulty propshaft seal leaked in water for a long time. Said all the internal parts are destroyed and need to be... Apparently a faulty propshaft seal leaked in water for a long time. Said all the internal parts are destroyed and need to be replaced. I saw all the parts... twisted input shaft, rusty prop shaft, rusty gears...etc.
Question: Is rust on a prop shaft really a problem?

Got another one, pulled off the drive and bell housing to see that the lip around the gimbal that holds the bellows on was missing pieces all around (dont know how that happened, no pieces in the bellows... I was wondering what is it going to cost in labor to have the engine pulled and the transom assembly replaced.

also its a 98 B1, will the new transom assmeblies work with it, how about an HP one? The reason I ask is because I see complete packages on ebay for around 2k which includes bell housing and inner plate.

Ran into two problems. 1) on one of the trim limiters, where it sits in the hinge pin is broken. I am talking about the little black pieces that stick out the back of the limiter allowing it to sit... 1) on one of the trim limiters, where it sits in the hinge pin is broken. I am talking about the little black pieces that stick out the back of the limiter allowing it to sit in the hinge pin. Are these needed. Can I just screw the trim limiter back on with the two mounting screws?

2)I had not planned on replacing the shift cable but when I got things apart noticed that the housing was damaged (I was suprised the shift cable was still in one piece, lucky it had not left me stranded) so I am going to replace it. My problem is that the brass piece in the bell housing is stuck. I got the small nut off, but during that the big one on the back broke. I mean this thing is stuck good in there. Would anyone suggest drilling it out or not. If not I guess its a new bell housing.

If I am going to have the gimbal apart to replace a lower bearing and some crusty u-joint boots, do I need to replace the rubber exhaust tube at all? It wouldn't seem like a necessary connection to keep intact.

The bolts that mount the outdrive up to the gimbal are different between the two sets i have for some reason.

1 outer assembly has bolts that are just over 2". Call it 2 1/4" length.

The other has them at 4 1/4" length.

The outdrive i have is the TRS rh turn. I bought the other one with the 4" bolts as a backup for a rebuild.
It looks like i will have to cut them down and have some threads turned onto them.

Just curious as if any of you know why this may be?

They are telling me they are one inch shorties. Are they marked or how do you measure to see if they are really - one inch. I measured from the bottom of the sceg to the top of the lower and it was like 18" on the prop side and the thick flange where it bolts to the upper is 3/4" thick.
