boat painting 101
got a nice project in the shop right now brought to me by Sean H an i thought i would walk everybody through the process while i am doing it. its a 99 30 foot Spectre in for a change of color, a custom windscreen and a deck hatch. also filling in a gazillion holes of all sizes . this thread is going to span the next several weeks with updates most likley on sundays.
first things first . . . cover EVERYTHING . . . trailer, drives and engines. for some strange reason people dont want their stuff custom speckle painted to match their new paint job i learned this the hard way as in my earliest days of painting i was known as overspray Dave . . .but that was befor i was GlassDave . . . . . "an ounce of prevention . . . "

we are filling all the original snap holes along with most of the deck hardware. the snap holes are filled with WestSystem epoxy and 404 filler. mix it to a nice thick peanut buttery paste. i prep the holes with a cordless drill and this cool bit i found at i think Home Depot. its about a half inch round and does a nice clean job opening up the hole. i use a bit this size because most snap holes have small cracks in the gel around them and this usually covers them. also i prefer a cordless drill over a die grinder because its slower and easier to hold in place.

after the holes are preped you just feed the epoxy in with an acid brush and let it cure. its a good idea to try an do everything in stages. in other words i should only have this bit out once. grind them all at the same time, fill them all at the same time, sand them all at the same time. it get confusing if you tend to jump from project to project on something like this.

Re: boat painting 101
inbetween cure times on deck repairs i start prepping the sides. this is usually just a bunch of grunt work so its a great way to keep the project moving while i am waiting for things to cure topside. i sanded both sides down with 320 on a DA and spent some time looking it over closely and taking care of any dock bites i can find. any chips in the gel are preped with either a small die grinder or a piece of 80 grit folded into kind of a knife edge that you can run through the scrape to clean it up. tough to see any of this in the pics cuz most were very small. ( im sure Sean knows where each one is though )
