Yep...heat gun...peel off what you can....the link below is the best stuff I have found to remove the remaining glue....

I'd say wait for a nice hot day and leave the boat in the sun for a few hours to let things heat up.....should help get it all off easy....then just follow up with adhesive remover if need be.....may take 2 days depending on how much you have to do...just do one side at a time...

For vinyl that old you may need a vinyl eraser wheel (fits on a drill). Really old stuff can be so hard and brittle that the heat gun method is nearly useless because the vinyl breaks off in tiny pieces- you'll know fairly soon into it if this is the case. The 3M product will work on the adhesive but only AFTER you have removed all the vinyl. In my opinion, citric-based products work just as well, are much cheaper, easier on your skin and you can rinse off the snotty residue with a water hose. Use a plastic pot scrubber to break down the hardened adhesive, then use the squeegee to scoop the majority of the goop into a paper towel before you rinse.
Another method that works well on large vinyl is to use a heat lamp tree like the ones body shops use to cure paint. It will warm a large area and you can use both hands.
I've found that a cooler full of beverages helps this type of project as much as anything.

Go to www.signwarehouse.com they have all the products available to take off Vinyl Graphics.No a easy task... Bud from Mr Vinyl

I found that there is is a special "knife" with a razorblade that you use for ceramic ovens. I used that knife to get rid of my graphics, didn't scratch the gelcoat once and the adhesive come of together with the vinyl.
