Re: Transom rot! Looks like a long winter for me!
Offshore Ginger: Spoke to Ted with Composites one the other day and he was very helpful. Thanks again, I am going with the West systems Epoxy. The 105 Resin and 206 hardner (slow) for the structural stuff with the 404 high density filler for strucural and the 410 for outside finish work. Thank GOD for my port supply card! I got almost 40% off list at my local West Marine store. My Grandfather always told me buy the best and you will never be sorry.
Going to start the template and dry fitting all the wood tomarrow and will comence with the epoxy work shortly...I'll keep you guys posted.

Re: Transom rot! Looks like a long winter for me!
You will need to use two layers of plywood for the transom. Make sure that you drill holes in the wood so that you can have air pass through it and not give you air bubbles. Go through a few test runs with what ever set up you are going to use to hold the wood to the transom. While that transom looks strait it is not there is a slight curv in it.

Re: Transom rot! Looks like a long winter for me!
Thanks Jon, I did take your advice. The transome is in. I first made a template out of paint sticks, cardboard and hot glue. Placed it on the plywood and cut it out with a skill saw and in the corners and mouse hole at the bottom I used a router. I also used the router to slightly round over the back and front lower edge to get them to fit more snug at the bottom. I first laminated the two pieces together by wetting out both sides and them mixing in a little 404 filler to give it some body and trouled it on with a thin set troul. Worked out great!

Re: Transom rot! Looks like a long winter for me!
The next day I dry fit the whole thing and scuffed with 80 grit. I built all the bracing to keep the transom straight. Checked it with a level and used it that as my straight edge. That took most of the day. Double checked all the edges and ground some spots at the top where the transom has a slightly rounded upper corner. Then I mixed up more epoxy and wetted out the mating surface and then mixed in the 404 filler to get a paiste consistency and trouled it onto the inner side of the outer skin. I then mixed more 404 to a peanut butter consisency, and laid that into the bottom so that any voids would be filled and none of it would run or slide out. Clamped it in place and double checked for sraightness and wiped out the sqeezings as they pushed out of all sides. The back of the boat inside and out are perfect accept for on small spot at the upper left corner. I had to drill a hole into that spot and through bolt it with washers to get it right. It's now in and set up, I will head back down to knock off all the bracing later today. Here are some more pics...

Re: Transom rot! Looks like a long winter for me!
Looking great man. Just make sure that you round off all the edges so that the glass will bend around with no bubbles. A little trick that I learned was to use a cabasile (sp) paste were the corners are as it holds the glass very well.

I'll keep it for you when I'm done...I'm still using it as a glass matt template. Come on down and pick it up, I'll be sure to take you out for a beer. I got a great bunch of friends up in Port Stanley, They come accross the lake one or twice a year and we do the same.
