I would like to spray gel coat in my engine compartment myself.I have no idea how to do it.Are there any good instruction books or DVD's out there on the process,or can you guys guide me through it? Thanks

Try www.fiberglast.com I used their gel and Duratec additive. Works great. They say to mix it 1:1 but do it 2 gel to 1 Duratec for better coverage. I bought my spray gun off E-bay that has, I think, a 1.8mm nozzle. I practiced on some large pieces of cardboard before I did the boat.

You can also brush it on. It is a pain in the a$$, but it can be done.

Thanks,excellent site.Another silly question to you pros,Do you have to worry about overspray with Gel cote ?Does it get everywhere ?

rather than spraying you would probably be better off just brushing it on.

You will have a hard time getting it to "shine" if that is what you are looking for then I would go the Imron route.... It smells like holly hell but seems to work real good. I think that they now make a brushable catalyst also.

I did the brush work w/ gell coat in my bilge. I won't do it again. It was give to me by a guy in the know. I followed all the steps and mixtures etc,etc. It didn't harden properly. I was told that gell doesn't like air when curring but I used all the "good stuff" to make it kick. The long and short of it is , it didn't shine for long and stains easily. It became a nightmare when I would climb in the bilge. I may use Imron or Awlgrip this next month as my engine is pulled at this time.

By the way, how is Imron over gell??

works good just make sure it is sanded well. i would ruff it up with 180 than final it with about 320

Tomcei They make 2 different kind of gelcoat, One must be topcoated with a sealing agent/mold release to prevent air for proper curing. The other does not need to be topcoated and will harden properly and polish up nice . I found this out when I regelled my outer transom. I removed it all and put the proper suff on.

I was working w/ a boat builder at the time and would have thought the kit he gave me should have done better. Oh well. This is the pic when I finished it. It looked great for a little while. It just didn't hold up. I'm still torn between awl grip or Imron
