Awlgrip??
I'm working on the resto of my 24 Pantera, and I want to Awlgrip the transom and hull - all white. I intend on spraying a solid color to the hull sides from chine to rub-rail.
Those of you with experience, give me an idea of what I'm getting into. Where is the best place to buy this stuff. I need to do a little fill work on the hull - should I use Duraglass, or is there something better. What are your suggestions and insights?? |
I think regular awlgrip is very unfriendly to the novice (like me). It's damn pretty if you get it right, but if you mess up a bit, or get bugs and dust in it before it dries, then it becomes part of the... character. I switched to Awlcraft 2000 and couldn't be happier... bugs, runs, whatever can easily be wetsanded out.

Not sure on the paint. How much fill work do you need to do? Is it just some chips in the gel coat or into the glass?
|
I think the work on the nicks and things is all duraglass type fill.
|
duraglass will work fine.
as for the awl grip, spray it dry as it will run like the wind on you if you apply it to wet. it has almost a large molten way of falling onto the surface. the plus side is that with proper application and preparation it will last a long time and look good doing it. |
It's probably more expensive , but PPg can mix or you can buy their standard white in a single stage urethane that sprays great and can be wet sanded and buffed. It is very durable also.

I am not a huge awlgrip or imron fan.. PPG' high end stuff I feel is better to use, however I personally prefer using BASF Diamont... But thats me.. Jamie / Lakeside

Why not white gel with dutatec?
|
Sure the white gel with the duratech additive works well too to get the gel flowing better & leaving a glossier finish... Just take it easy on the duratech, otherwise I have found that it thins the color too much making proper coverage difficult. Jamie
