Balsa is classified as a hard wood, everyone thinks that because you can gouge it out it's soft, but in compression it is extreamly hard. It will produce the lightest and stiffest panel, that is why Skaters are Baltek=Balsa, rotting is the problem vs foam, the new stuff addresses this, so they say. and yes the blades can be repaired!!!

We put a 2' wide section of Balsa where ever a bulkhead is going. It's bedded into a layerof 1.5 oz. mat, then glasseed over with 3 layers, mat roving, mat. The bulkhead is fitted, and glassed in with 4 plys. 3 plys of 1708,then a mat on top. We use the balsa for the bulkheads on the sides of the hulls that aren't fully cored. It's for compression reasons. If it wasn't there, stress cracks would develop where the bulkhead is.
