Hi Brian sorry i missed all this. Been kinda busy lately. If you want a good gloss on a brushed gel bilge you may want to do it in steps. It depends on how fine you want the final finish. If i am looking for high gloss fairly smooth finish i will toss some Duratec additive in the mix and do it in sections. You have to sort of nurse it as its curing and only have a small window to stack it up while its going off. Its sort of like tipping Allgrip. Waxed gels will leave a flat finish, if you really want it smooth you may have to do it a couple of times and sand down between coats.

my boat has a transom now! i just finished laying the biax last night and am gonna throw another couple layers around the edge tonight if the weather holds out. brians outlaw had 1 piece of wood in on saturday and i think he got the second in last night? i am moving onto stringers and bulkheads this week and then the floors which should be easy.

dave, i have a question for you. we have the boat on a pretty level surface and i have a very strong trailer, like it wont twist much if you wanted it to, trust me we found that out with jackstands. when i go to install the stringers do i need to support the boat in any way besides with the trailer? i have read a bunch about this and just like the grade of wood debate everyone says something different. i am thinking i am ok to just lay it all in with it supported by the trailer.....

if its a full length bunk style trailer and fits the boat well you should be ok. Your boat really isnt big enough to do a lot of damage to itself. I usually try and unload some weight at the transom in cases where the bunks dont extend off the edge. Eye ball the strakes and maybe hold a straight edge up to the rear portion of the running surface.

the trailer i think was custom fit for those boats back then, it really does fit onj it well so with that theory i should be ok. as far as unloading weight, well the boat is literally gutted and ther really isnt anything left to remove lol. baja brian got some bad news on his stringers last night also..... thanks again dave, you really have been a help on this project!

sounds like you should be ok. What was the bad news on his stringers?

Well I went to install the new transom and had to cut the stringers back on an angle to allow me to wedge the plywood into place. I though the stringers were solid, ya well not so much. They are two pieces of 3/4" plywood and one layer is gone, rotted out. After a couple beers and a few conversations with myself I went back to the drawing board and was able to cut the stringers off by the bulkhead and I am going to splice in new one. Not a show stopper by any means just a little bump in the road.

This whole rotten wood issue started over my above water exhaust. It appears that the rubber hose that connects the tail pipe to the exhaust tip at the transom never had the hose clamp tightened. I am thinking the water ran down into the transom (between the plys) and then after the plywood was saturated the water started to absorb in to the port side stringer. Grr, all of this over a 50 cent hose clamp not being tightened. Ill post a coupe pics soon!

haha, sorry about that when I posted the pics! Since the 3/4" marine grade plywood was $103 per sheet, I used $5.99 Home Depot OSB / flake board as a template. I took the OSB and cut it out, and then test fit everything before I built the nerve to cut the marine grade plywood. I would rather screw-up a $5.99 sheet of wood rather that the $103 stuff! You can rest assured I DID NOT use the OSB / flake board for a finished product!

Just a quick update on Josh's boat (aka regalman) ..... he has the biax on the transom and everything on the transom cut out except for the above water exhaust holes. Everything else is on the transom (minus paint) is done. I think he / we might work on the stringers this week. He ended up having to remove his stringers from the transom to inside the cuddy. We picked up the plywood for it the other day and i am thinking we will get going them this week!
