i have a question for you. please look at the pic below. this is the after pic when i complete the deck mods. my question is - what should i do as far as going up higher near the cockpit area. not sure if i should have a plastic/lexon windshield made up or glass another section on a smaller scale similar as to what you did. my head would more than likely be 12" above the highest point you see below. otherwise possibly incorporate some flip ups. any advice would be appreciated.,
thanks,
john

John I built my fairing out of sanded ply. Once I was happy with the shape and fit it was bonded to the deck with west system 404 and vinylester resin. The gel around the whole fairing was ground away about 4" and completly down to the glass. Two layers of 1708 glass were applied. Then a asss load of fairing plastic to make it all blend in good. Primed then painted.
As far as yours goes...I would build it like the one you have pics of. Once finished run it to see if you need additional protection from the wind. I like the look of a small clear fairing/lip on top. I think putting a smaller fibeglass fairing on top as you suggested will take away from the sleek look you desire. I don't even care for the glass pods sticking up near the guys elbow in the pic. It would look cleaner if it were flat across.

thanks for your help. what is the plastic fairing your refering to? is it basically like duraglass? i would imagine it would take a lot of blocking to get it straight. also where did you get most of your supplies / materials. also the sanded ply? not familiar with this. where is the best place to get this and how thick is it? 1/4" ?
Thanks for your help.

I like this place http://www.uscomposites.com/
Click on products at the top then click on fillers. You'll see every filler you'll need. Also sanded ply...go to any lumber yard. Sanded plywood is much smoother (less air between wood and glass). You'll know when you found it because it will cost twice as much

If you go with imron make sure you get a good respirator. Fumes are real toxic.

got it. thanks again for your help. i may PM you from time to time as i get closer to and during this project. i hope you don't mind. i have a good body shop nearby that does a lot of custom street rod stuff however i had him look at it the other day and i feared by the conversation we had and as he looked it over the price was going to be extremely high. i may have twice as much time into it as he would however i have the time and not a lot of money. as long as the end result is the same who cares right. i have most the winter off so i can spend the time it takes to do it right. my bigest task will be getting the deck straight where i need to extend from the old fairing back.
thanks again,
john

Some more. I am at the point of trying to achieve the center raised portion down the middle of the deck. Not sure if I am going to use foam or build up a couple of layers of laminate. I left the over hang on the two bridged sections until I decided what way I was going to go. I only need about 1/2" and probably 3 layers of 1708 a lot of reinforcing on the inside.
It's been a fun project and will get some more pics soon.
