Gel Coat will not dry????

I picked up some factory Gel Coat and hardner from the dealer. They told me to mix it 2% hardner into the gel coat and cover it with plastic tape to get it to dry. It takes forever
(2 days and top is still tacky) to dry this way. I have tried more hardner but this does not seem to help either. I have seen some posts on page talking about adding wax to gel coat to help it dry. How do you do that? It there a better way to dry gel coat? What can a guy use to thicken up the gel coat so it is not so runny?
Thanks.
Mike

First off, if you're applying the gel coat to a large area you should be using a spray gun. If it's just a small repair you can usually get away with using a stiff bristle brush but spraying still works better. You almost have to use waxed gel coat if your applying it outside of a mold but if the stuff you have isn't then you can usually just use wax paper if it's a flat enough surface. You need to mix the gel coat according to the manufacturer's directions and apply it however you prefer, like I said spraying is the best, and then take some wax paper and pull it tight accross the area so that no air can get to it. It will take about 6-8 hours for it to cure enough for you to remove the paper. After you remove the paper let it sit overnight without touching it. The wax from the paper will still be stuck to the gel coat so you have to sand that off. I just use wet sand paper dry in like a 400 grit and sand lightly until you arn't removing anymore wax. After that wet sand with finer grits and polish. Hope this helps

If the gel in the cup did not get hard, you did not use enough hardner. Once you get the hardner figured out, the gel will always be sticky/tacky on the top. Wipe the top layer off with laquer thinner and the lower layers should be hard.. Jeff
