Media blasting works best.

media blasting like soda blasting works great but is expensive

I used a set of snap on gasket scrapers that I had and scraped it off then sanded with 320 on a DA but I was planning to repaint the bottom anyway,

you could probably scrape the bottom paint off them remove the leftovers with a solvent of some sort or stripper just be careful not to gauge the boat when using the scrapers

why are you leaving the bottom paint on anyway ?

I would use a marine paint stripper since you are only talking about a small area.

Not sure what type of paint you're talking about but if you are referring to "antifouling paint" being the paint that helps prevent growth in salt water then you are talking about a lot more work than what has been posted on this thread.

You will destroy the gel coat anywhere that paint is removed. You then have to go back and re-surface the stripped area. You also need to trust the person doing it as you now have the probability that the bottom of the boat will not be as straight as it should.

Thus causing low's and high's that will affect performance, fuel consumption and the over all feel of the ride. It's a big job to do it correctly.

I hope I'm wrong and wish you well. Perhaps it's just a cosmetic thing that rubs off with solvent but you should check into it before removal.

Use a small hammer and lightly ding the painted areas and see if it cracks or chips off. If it does, then it's possible that it was not applied correctly and you may be a little bit more lucky but still not an easy job.

The entire bottom, transom and some on the lower sides. Talking about a 32 foot boat. That is anything BUT a small area.

I'm not planning on removing the whole bottom just the small section on the sides and the transom, thanks for all the tips I'll start in a safe spot and see what works, hopefully whoever aplied the paint didnt prep it right and it will come off easily!!

Use "peel away" marine paint stripper. I have used it to remove anti-fouling and it works great. Nasty job. After it softens the paint - use a putty knife or scraper to remove the bulk. Then use some 400-600 grit wet sandpaper and then buff the bottom. You will never know it was there.

Thanks Hotboat1, where can I find peelaway? Is it different from other stippers?
