Suggestions on repainting a 38 cig
Looking for suggestions on repainting our 38 Top Gun. It was previously repainted over factory paint/gel (it is a 1988 dont know if it was paint or gel from the factory??) The current paint job seems to have a good hold, no flaking or cracking etc... However I don't want to get too many mills built up. We use PPG products in our bodyshop, just got a new waterborne mixing bank! Not much experience in painting boats, so should we soda blast it, strip it??? Prep and paint? Also, wondering what is the best clear is to use? I was thinking PPG DCU-2021??? There will be several colors & designs.
Any sugestions/advice would be appreciated!!!

it was probably gelcoat with Imron stripes from the factory and if its only got one paint job on top of that you should be ok to work with whats there without striping it. Granted its better to have less mills but chemical and/or soda blasting could create more work then its worth. make sure any graphics that are currently on the boat get sanded down aggressivly to keep them from printing back through. As I'm sure you already know start course to level the surface and work up from there. On boats that have graphics I'm trying to cover i hit the areas with 80 and spot prime with K-36, block sand then seal with DP-48LF. If a complete color change seal the whole thing in DP-48. I have always used DBC base coats with 2021 clear and have always had excellent results. I try to keep the whole thing as simple as possible also I've found it easier to split up spraying between the deck and hull. Do the hull sides first on one day then the deck the next day. easier to mask off the sides to protect them from overspray then the deck.
