How hard is Fiberglass for the DIY??
#21
I would start out with a gallon of resin and maybe three yards of 1808, that will get ya going. I get brushes in one two and three inch, there handy in different sizes but generally i seem to go through twice as many two inchers.

I recommend reading & learning the fundamentals so you have a basic underrstanding behind the different approaches to all kinds of repairs ....I still refer to this book "Fiberglass Boat Building for Amatures" by Ken Hankinson -it's a mid 80's book & way old sckool, but very good to read.

Go ahead and use Poly-ester resin and it will shrink up and you will clearly see repair down the road . On my Skater dash I have 25 holes to fill and I decided to make a 1/8 alum dash face with alum studs welded on so there are zero screws on front side . Also in pic are the Console and shifter arch that I made using mold and Vinlyester resin .

Thank you ! I do all my own fab work as well , glass work and paint in house . It is 1/8 alum with studs welded on and a little body work where the welds are then it was put in epoxy and then single stage . then cleared . I was in the powercoat business for 10 yrs and will NEVER again powercoat anything on my boat again ! Why ? Well it has a ton of orange peel , if it get scratched you cant get a color match and unless you have it done with primer first , powercoat is way over-rated and has its purpuse in life as in brackets . Here area few pics of the one off custom hatch I made from making mold to part .

I noticed you used paint stirers around the lip of the hatch. Was that to allow for the thickness of a weather stripping? -or- for even adjustment around the perimeter without a cushion.........will you need to use anything at all for the 2 hard surfaces where they meet (hatch to deck)..........Great fabrication!
