Need Advice for an Idiot fliping XK-19

:Ok guys I really need some help here. I don't really have any freinds here when you say work everybody scatters like a covy of quails! I am out in the STICKS ! TALKING B.F.E! There is no boat hull repair shops here. I have my own marine repair business but I only do engines ,electrical and some stern drives. I used to do Auto Body and paint back in the 80s.

Ok I really need to flip my 71 XK-19 I have the engine and drive out and the engine is completely rebuilt and fresh and never been fired sitting in the shop. my shop only has 9 foot ceilings so I dont have a lot of room to rig up a boat inside to flip it over. I want to do this boat right because of the rarity of it. The fuel tank is inside the bow I would like to drill the rivets and remove the whole top and gut everything my plan is to redo all the paint and interior of the boat.

I seen a U-Tube where a guys made some bracing and had a bunch of guys come over and flip the boat over and when they were done set up some used tires and moving blankets and flip the bottom the hull back on the tires. I am going to have to hire the guys I do not have anybody to help me at all. I am going to have to do this out side.
So can sombody help me I am an idiot on this s##t so some help would be greatly apprciated! Again I have no help! Thanks guys!

I would think a few strong boys could roll a 19ft boat by hand like you described.
They should be able to control the decent as well, and not just drop it.
Just have a safety talk before hand incase it gets away from them.
Better to scratch some FG verses hurt someone.

Talk to the local senior high school boys, throw them a couple cases of beer their way after the job and I'm sure they would be happy to help!

When I flipped my 29ft Scarab for bottom work I used a crane, long webslings, spreader bars & both the main hook & fast line hook. Worked a treat. No damage either way.

uhhh yea maybe not on the throwing a couple cases of beer to high school boys lol.

But yea call a half dozen or so friends we've done it many times with six or eight people for a boat that small. Get a couple old mattresses or tires without rims to cushion it as it goes over.

Default Bracing

The walls on the X are really thin. Can I pop off the top take out the fuel tank gutt everything inside and flip it over then or am I going to take a chance on breaking the side of the hull? I do not know how to brace the boat either. Do I need to put the top back on put some maching screws and nuts on some of the holes to hold the top in place then turn it over? Some ideas of a very rare boat? I dont want to turn it over with the fuel tank inside and have all the old gas run out all over the boat. Its a 40 gallon tank to boot! I also want to clean and steam the tank.
Thanks guys!

definitely get the tank out of there if at all possible. Your just gonna hafta go easy on flippin it. Just round up all the hands you can, it really isnt to tough and only takes a few minutes. I'm sure its probably better to have the deck on but with the weight off i can imagine that thing weighs more the four or five hundred pounds all stripped out. I have done twentys my self with only one other person. It really helps to have a few old mattresses or tires to roll it on.

got a pic of this cream puff?

Maybe flip it outside in the yard, and have a friend with a flatbed truck carefully place it inside.

Ok so am I on the right track? Pop the top take out the tank and strip the inside? Then put the top back on? The bracing scares the hell out of me I do not know how to brace this boat. And what I am finding out from the experts never lift or roll a boat with out bracing on the inside. Like I said the sides of the hull is really thin. I am thinking that Chris Craft did this to save weight? I could see cracking the sides of the hull very easily. Thanks for all your insight guys!

Default fixx

i did my x18,,it was simple and me and a buddy did it by our selves, what i did was once the top was off and everything was out of the boat(make sure your stringers are good and strong) if you need to do any stringer work do that first so you have something strong to clamp to..OK here's what i did, first i got about 20 2x4's and a few 2x6's and a short piece of 2x12's..first i secures the sides of the boat with some 3'' screws and fender washers,i drove the screws in through the lip of the boat into the 2x4s to keep the sides from flexing.after i has the sides secured i went into the boat and measured from the bottom of the stringers to 3'' past the top of the boat,i through bolted the rear 2 through the existing motor mount holes in the stringers..the front 2 i mounted even with the front seats and used c clamps and clamped those 2 to the stringers..then i cut one 2x6 and screwed it between the 2 2x12s..BTW from front to back the 2x12s were 8' apart..then i took 2 2x6s and screwed them to the top of the 2x12s,then i mounted some caster wheels to the top of the 2x6s towards the outside of the 2x12s so i could roll it around in the shop..then i measured the height of the side of the hull then built the sides out of 2x6s and 2x4s,,once the sides were built i bolt the framing for the bottom..once i have the framing build for the bottom i notched the 2x6's to fit into the st raked to keep the boat from moving around in the box i built around the boat..i also sandwiched some carpet hair pad between the hull and the wood..so the box measured 8' wide x 5' high. once i had it all tied together me and a 6'4 friend started to flip the boat on its side, fair warning once you get the boat about to the 6' level it gets vary heavy and we almost lost it..we left the boat on its side and i decided to use the forklift for finish flipping the boat over..once the boat was flipped over i unscrewed the lower part of the box and took it off in whole sections and set then aside for later use..i'm glad i put the casters on, it really made it easy to move the boat around..
