Question Gelcoat 101 I need all the help I can get

I finished filling the little hook and imperfections in the bottom of my boat with 3m Premium filler. I now need to protect this with gelcoat. Do I just shoot gel over the 3m filler? I have read every thread about spraying gel on this forum and have googled and Youtubed the subject to death.

I have never sprayed gel and kind of confused with the waxed, nonwaxed, PVA over it and mixed with Duratech highgloss. I have the last 8' of the hull that needs to be shot to cover the filler.

I have bought 2 of the infamous Harbor Freight $15 disposable guns and I also a real gelcoat gun.

I am a little scared what gun to use. The real gel gun I think I would put it on to thick and will sag with less control. I feel that I could finesse the gel better with the $15 guns with the tip drilled out.

Also I have been looking at trying to spray these gels for a one step finish.

If someone just wants to say order this..... and this ..... and this.... and mix to these ratios and then spray with this gun I will
Thanks,
Jason

The whole process depends largely on how much coverage you need. If the filled/faired ares are white as well as the surrounding are you can go with a gel/Duratech mix through one of the harbor freight guns with the tip drilled out a bit. If you have a lot of spots that need coverage you may need to spot cover those first with a waxed gell and re sand it a bit.

After we zero in on the process tailored to your boat we'll work on a grocery list

The bottom of the boat is white gel (dingy) and the filled/faired area last 8' outer chines in is 3m filler area is with white hardener. So it has a light yellow hue.

I will get pics this weekend.

Ok, all is smoothed out and straight. I do not need anything filled with gel. I would like to do the straight gel/Duratech if this will bond to the 3Mpremium filler. It is prepped as good as if I was going to lay down paint.

Also this might be a real dumb question, could I just use a roller and roll it on? I am going to finish sanding when I'm done.

The inner strakes are going to be after I finish the bottom. Then I will have a before and after for both. I also did not believe that truing/blueprinting?? the hull would be so labor intensive. As I mentioned in another post I have a new respect for those that do this for a living. I should have flipped the boat last year and done this while it was gutted.

From what I've read you drill it out to 2-2.2mm. And pics will be up soon.
I think I will start a before and after thread in the Scarab section. Seeing that I have replaced/upgraded everything on this boat.

I use a 5/64ths (2mm) on the HF gun, make sure that you dont get into the protruding part of the tip and knock it off otherwise it will not draw fluid through and just pressurize the cup (something brought to my attention recently)

yes its fine over the VE filler, be careful you arent to fine on the sanded grit. For gel i only go to about 180 or so. Rollers are tough to control uniform film thickness stick with a gun.
