Paint /gel coat what to use

What should I use gel coat , paint ??? Im looking to restore a formula hull to have a shinny finish and look factory or professional .... What is the best way to go would like to do myself very capable , but don't know if paint on a boat is frowned upon ....... Any info please

paint is very suceptable to dings , not nearly as tuff , i have paint , love the look but dam
