I'm finally back to work on my rebuild after a long winter and crazy busy work schedule. Now my question is, can I use reinforced short strand "bondo" or duraglass for my fillets? I'm hoping to save on some vinylester and a lot of time mixing. Thanks in advance

no you cannot use (or should not use) body type fillers like Duraglass. You best off with a bedding and bonding compound. Where are you located?

OK next question, should I peanut butter my new transom to the hull or use 1.5 oz mat between the two? So far I have all my wood cut out and fitted tight and I'm getting ready to seal all my new wood and wrap it in 1.5oz before I install it. On the hull side I have the old wood and fiberglass all cut out and sanded smooth with 100 grit on my belt sander. Hopefully all this sounds right. Also would it be smart or even OK to coat the entire bilge with white gel after I'm finally done rebuilding? Just figured I would ask now so I can add it to my next order. Thanks for the help oso

I searched around and I'm sure the answer it here somewhere but I can't seem to find it. Do I need to sand between layers of glass? I'm using unwaxed vinyl ester.

OK almost done with my structural fiberglass work and just ordered 2 gals of white gel and 1 gal of clear duratec. Now my next list of questions, how should I prep the bilge? How long do I need to let the new fiberglass cure before gel? And if there's any tips to make this go smoothly? I plan to roller one coat of straight gel and then one coat of gel/duratec does this sound about right?

hey sorry just saw this last pages... dave has posted photos here before... but DO NOT pre wrap... best way to do it is one big wet lay up... your going to lay a 2 layer glass layer on the transom put a piece of wood up onto the fresh glass... depending on the heat and amount of the hardener... by the time you get to one side itll start to be getting warm and tacky at least what i use... get a set of hands with you... grind the wood with 24 or 36 grit, pre wet the wood. put the wood up get some screws and screw the board to the transom. just to hold it in place... use some big bolts in areas that are already have holes IE drain hole, strap holes, drive holes etc. use backing pieces to have an anchor point and really snug those *****es on.. the tighter you can get it the better. let it harden and cure. repeat a many times as your planning. thats the best way to do it.
