Thanks all. Will be drilling from the back toward inside of engine compartment. So, no way to finish from the inside.....Agree, measure many times, drill once.....

Store the Formula at Joint Base, and get a wet slip for the weekends.

I'll be out at the Lake 28 Aug to 1 Sep.

One other thing to watch for....
Use a battery drill with a slip clutch. If your hole saw bites and sticks you will want the drill to give via the clutch.
If you use a clutch less pistol drill and it bites and sticks, bad things will happen

This is especially true for large diameter holes such as the 3 inch you're drilling.

Ps.....I broke 4 metatarsal bones in one hand when I locked up a 4 inch hole saw in a sheet of plywood as an apprentice years ago.

Have you seen the Fusion stereos where you control everything through an app with your smartphone? Droid or iPhone in a lifeproof case, and a lanyard on your swim platform may be better than cutting a hole. You boat will likely outlive those electronics, and the next one you move to may not have the same remote option.

some good points! Last time a drilled about a 6" hole for side exit exhaust, one drillbit hole at a time around the circle, then just tidied up the edges for a tight fit. I think I will do the same for this job. Diameter of back of remote is actually like 2 7/8ths or little less, so would be a sloppy fit in 3". Thanks all.

Agreed, go bluetooth through the phone. Electronics continue to change, the only thing that has been standard as of late is the size of the stereo. Remotes have changed a ton in size. Besides the phone control gives you way more options that the remote and still has full control. No wires, no holes, no problems and no loss in audio quality.

Simple, the teeth bite hard, the 1/4" pilot bit snaps and the saw goes wild.

End result is a torn up panel.
