If you're going to use epoxy using the WEST 610 injection tubes with the mixer tip is faster, easier, and cleaner ! Tape the outside, slit tape over the holes, inject until it pops out the other side (will not sag), then clean up any excess on the outside. It will shrink/absorb into the wood transom just slightly, leaving a depression you can sand and then glass over. Just did this on my Scarab, worked great.

Starting the project this weekend... but one more question. Should I use fiberglass mat or cloth? Thinking mat. Just want to be sure.

Well... I finished it up this weekend and it turned out very good in my opinion. Dropping it off tomorrow for gelcoat.... saved myself a few $$ filling and glassing myself.

Thanks fellas! Was alot easier than I thought! The hard part is trying to clean up all the sanded glass pieces on the garage floor... big mistake sanding in the garage. After the first couple holes I moved the sanding outside at the end of the driveway... but this sh!t will not come off the concrete floor in the garage... even power washed it. Think I might just epoxy the floor in the next couple weeks.

I will defer to dave on this, but if you filled the holes with epoxy, the polyester gelcoat is not going to cure and bond properly to the epoxy areas without a special barrier or tie coat between the two. If the epoxy is just the 1/4" hole it may not be a problem, but if the epoxy is faired out to a larger diameter you have a problem.

It is possible to get gel to cure over epoxy but the chemestry and process is sometimes difficult to get right, in general I tend to steer do it yourselfers away from it. I dont even bother with it on my own either, to many things need to be fairly precise for it to work, seen far to many failures over time. If you used West's resin your chances are greater. Some things to strive for if your gonna try it are proper mix ratio, full cure and a simple water wash down of the surface.
