404 filler vs dowels for thru bolt holes
So I just recently removed all my brackets for my current swim platform setup and have 16 1/4 holes, I've already drilled them up to 3/8 for fresh material, what would be the best way to fill these holes? I have west systems epoxy and 404 filler from a past project... what I'm thinking is to just tape off/cover the inside holes and then just fill the holes from the outside with a filler mix and tape it up so theres no sagging. Now... A few others have told me too just use some wooden dowels and epoxy, so Im a little confused/on the fence. I will be re-gelling the transom when I'm done...plan on installing a new aluminum platform after
Thanks fellas
Thanks fellas

Gonna follow your thread. Kinda have the similar thing going on only mine are only 3/16 holes and they are on the deck from rail removal. I did a few the other day just to experiment with and they turned out good. I just cut and shredded some mat into little pieces and mixed in with resin and filled with tape on the underside.
Not sure if the wood dowels would be the ticket in which case if they ever where to get wet etc. in my opinion your better off with your original plan - (404). Probably do it in a couple fill rather than one.
Good luck

if you dowel it use a little 404 in the resin. You could probably get away with a thick 404 mix but at 3/8ths your probably best with the method mentioned above. One thing to note if you did try to fill with a 404 mix dont tape one side of it and fill from the other, the tape will air lock it and only allow you to get just a bit in one side. its best to continue to press through one side with a yellow spreader till it squishes out the other side. Using this method you will still have to let it cure, grind it back to about the size of a silver dollar and toss on a couple small layers of glass.

So I take it that holes that are around 1/4 inch and less can I just use a little 404 and resin and syringe it into the hole?
Thanks for the comments for the 3/8 holes... answers I was looking for. Appreciate it! Going to give it a go this weekend.

pretty much, 1/4" would be about the limit.

Would using a dremal best to just clean up around the holes? I plan on having the transom re sprayed with gelcoat before installed my aluminum platform...hope to fill the holes tomorrow... just want to clean it up a bit before dropping it off at the glass shop. Or just leave it to the shop to do it.
