Question Battery placement and number question?

While doing winter maintenance I determined that the battery hold-downs had to come out for maintenance. I have 3 of them. As I unscrewed the middle holddown from the engine compartment floor, I found that the battery hold-down was screwed at one end into a access hatch panel, while the other end was screwed into the floor. What this means is that it is impossible to access this hatch without: a. removing the battery and b. unscreweing the hold down. I am hoping that this is not OEM design. Does anyone know how many batteries the Formula 36PC came with originally and where they were placed?

I think it was 2 and in the front outside of the engine compartments. At leaste that is were they are on a buddy's boat. I took mine from that location on the 302 and moved them to under the back seat.
