Need a speedo, sell me your old one?

My speedo has gone bad. Anyone have an old stock VDO unit from their formula that they would be willing to part with? I know many here have upgraded to new guages. I like the style of the original gauges.

If not, where can I buy a new one? Are they still made? The originals are now 16 years old.

This is the best pic I have of the dashboard. I have to believe that the speedos are the same on the late 80s early 90s formulas.

Are you sure the gauge itself is bad? Speedos are fairly dumb gauges, water pressure simply pushes the needle. It may be(and usually is) a problem with a clogged pickup, cracked, kinked or otherwise damaged pressure hose or hose just not connected.

You've probably checked all this stuff, just making sure before you junk your gauge.

Well I'm not entirely sure. Last year the gauge was working but was leaking on my feet. I could not for the life of me figure our where the water was coming from. I didn't realize that that water traveled all the way up from pickup to the gauge. After reading some threads on OSO it dawned on me that the water could be coming from the speedo. So I did some checking under the dashboard and found that the tube connected to the speedo was cracked and leaking. I cut a 1/2 inch off the tube, reattached and then tightened the clamp. Speedo worked fine for two weeks (and no leaks). After that the speedo stopped working altogether (but no leaks, which was good). This spring I take the boat out and the speedo still doesn't work. I give the boat some gas to get up on a plane and find that the speedo is leaking again. Cold water!
The water streams fast when going 55mph, so I stopped the boat to tighten up the clamp again.

Well it sounds like even if you get a new speedo, you're going to need to replace/address the speedo hose. I read on another board that the speedo tube should be all one piece, too.

If I were doing it, I'd replace the tube first. If the speedo still doesn't work (water damage from before??), then I'd replace it.

Screw it all . this is the PERFECT excuse to buy a GPS speedo.
The problem sounds like something is clogged at your speedo. pul it out and take it apart and you will proably find somehting in there. If you have a clamp on the hose nad it still pops off and leeeks you defenitly have a blockage. It's probably just some foriegn object in the speedo at the fitting or it could be the actuator assembaly for the needle itself is stuck.

I bought a Nordskog GPS Speedo last year for my '89 292 and love it. I had to do this as I installed Imco nosecones and therefore lost the pickup tube on the drive.

Fits right in the old speedo hole. Looks good too (you don't need the square piece of plastic around the gauge that the old VDO had).

PS: Dont try to put the GPS receiver under the dash, it won't receive the signal properly. I just used 2 sided velcro and put the receiver on the gunnel by the throttles.

Yeah, I have an inexpensive GPS by Garmin. It doesn't work quite right because the speed never reaches 75mph.

I guess I'll pull the speedo and water tube and see what is going on in there. If I change to a different style speedo then I would just have to change all of the guages to match!
