I have a 1991 Formula 311 that will not idle and they think the tank could be rusty and clogged the idle jet, does this seem possible? It runs great over 1000 RPM but will not idle. They checked the timing and choke. The fuel separator had some junk in it that looked like rust particles. Any ideas? Both engines are acting the same.

I would run a fuel line to a external tank then you will know if its the fuel in the tank or something else

My guess is bad fuel. The rust could be coming from water in your fuel filters. I would pull them and look for any signs of rust.

We think it is bad gas it could be a few years old (I just got this boat a few months back and the old owner has not used it in a few years) What is the best way to clean a tank?

How much fuel is left in it?
When I had to pull my tank I got a small pump and just pumped it out of the tank from the fuel pick ups.

For cuda...
Cuda's lady bears the avitar there Mo.
I second the bad gas thing & wonder what the heck you do with the old stuff in a situation like that....
I think I remember hearing it should smell "not right" too if it's bad.
Let us know how it works out....

1/2 tank. But here is the scoop. bought it with a 1/2 tank and then filled it up on land, ran 3/4 of that out then put in another 60 gal. ran that down to a 1/4 and then put in a 1/4 to get to the half. So I have run some gas through before this ideling situation started. I guess I have some geled gas in particles in the tank!
