LE,
Congrats! Glad to see that it's been a great set-up with no issues for you! That is an awesome number and for sure the fastest 353 Formula out there!!! How bad was the chine? I remember just getting over 90 and having the same issue, but I might have been over triming a little. It went away after I knocked the drives in a touch without shaving any speed. No difusers as well.
I tuned mine back a little over the last two years as well, but am still able to pull a solid 90 anytime wih the props turning out and just the 5 blades...

This past weekend the chine walking was minimal, it seems to happen more in smoother water. I was going with 1 to 2 footers and it felt great, but if I over trimed it would start chining.
In smooth water with no tab it could start at around 80/85mph on my boat. I will pull back the throttles a little, bring the trim in and it goes away instantly, then get back on the gas. If I start a run with some tab it doesnt seem to chine, but it will scrub some speed(not that my passengers seem to notice).
This is my 5th season with this boat/combo(the 1st 3 were a little rough), and I dont think I have found the full potential of this boat. I plan on playing with more props next year.
What 5 blades are you running? Even with the speeds I'm getting, my prop slip is in the high teens/low 20's. I'd love to pick up some efficiency, and cruising speed.
Thanks for the kind words.

My 4 blade labbed Bravo 1's 32 pitch and 15 1/14" diameter are my faster of the two sets, but the slip is thru the roof around 18% - 22%. I was told that as long as you have the speed...deal with the slip. At lower rpms, I still have slip but pretty good cruise 47-49mph @ 3000.
And you are welcome!!

I am running a 28 pitch Maximus, but it is a larger diameter (15 3/8") and I can turn it 5650 and that gets me 88-90 depending on the water as well. Slip is between 9%-12%.

I tried a set of Maximus's, and your right they dont slip. Cruising speeds picked up greatly, but the Bravo slip is one thing thats keeping my XR's alive.
Are the diffussers cut off the Maximus's? Because they do have huges rings, and a lot of blade. I was thinking 5 blade Hydromotives, if I can find a used set. Have you ever played with the Hydro's?

Great numbers guys......FYI: In my 382 (well, not mine anymore) I ran labbed 28 Maximus that were 15 5/8's or labbed 32P Bravos, both to 5,200-5,300 at 82-86 depending on conditions (80 if full of fuel, gear, and 4+ passengers in flat water). The Bravos got about 100 more rpm and speed but the Maximus were 5-6 mph faster at 3,500......certainly due to the slip being around 10-11%
Anyway, I ran those 32P bravos for 3 years before switching to the Maximus. 3-4 months after the switch I blew a drive........3-4 boating months later the new owner blows another drive. Be careful running big power and those 5 blades. Mine were larger (15 5/8's) but the XR's didn't like them.
BTW: The 382 is obviously a heavier boat, and at 4,200-4,300 I made peak TQ of 700 fully dressed on a dyno......you guys are making more power but at a higher rpm, so maybe not as much TQ???

700 ft lbs torque, you can not blame drive breakage on the prop. XR's are rated @ 500 or 550 Hp. I do not know what test are done by Mercury to achieve this rating but for sure the closer to that Hp number and or over the number the higher the risk or drive breakage. Most likely a guys will have tested and beat on the boat 100 times, then hang a maximus when the drive was ready to break anyway. Has anyone ever talked to mercury about the relationship of 500 Hp and zero slip to drive life ?

Couple of things...
Difusers are removed on both sets. You are right LE the ring on the Maximus is huge...gone now.
The XR's are rate up to 600hp. Merc paired them with their 600's. I've seen them live with 850 behind them. Depends on how you drive. Heck, I had standard Bravos (Performance) with 600 hp and was able to make them live for one whole season WITH the Maximus!!
As for the Hydros, I have not tried them. I took the word of the BBlades (Brett) and went with the Merc props. I wonder if anyone is running a different brand on a bigger HP Formula?

Do I sense some skepticism?
I thought the Bravo would be a ticking time bomb, but after 2 full seasons and some less then steller driving, I'm not complaining. Dont get me wrong, my maintenance schedule and upgrades aren't lacking.
