Formula race cat
This is way cool! Thought maybe you Formula guys would like this.... This was posted over in 'Classic Offshore' by h2oboater. Picture is from 1982. I never knew Formula did a cat, surely it was a splash of someone elses hull....??? Does anyone have any additional info on her?

I never knew Formula did a cat either. I see the bird on the back though. We need to get to the bottom of this story.

Something else is funny too, it says KAAMA on the boat but those drives don't look like KAAMAs.

The Formula Cat was not a pop of anything. The design was between Betty Cook's Kaama Engineering,McDonnell Douglas, the California Institute of Technology, and Formula. It was built in Formula's Miami plant. It won it's first race on it's maiden try in 1982,then won Cook's last race in New Orleans in April 1982 at age 59.She used Kaama engines, but I believe Merc drives, not sure about that, tho. She was a great competitor, and had a close relationship with the Porters. If cancer had not brought her down, she would maybe continued to race and win with the Formula Cat.

The drives in the pic look like old Speedmasters to me, for sure not Kaama drives.

BTW,the navigator on the maiden race of the 40' Formula Cat(which Betty Cook won) was none other than Scott Porter.

Magic,
That is all some very interesting history, thank you. I honestly would have lost a serious bet were someone to tell me Formula made a cat. Did they make and run just one cat or were there more?

I actually have the old data sheet on that boat Vic gave me way, way back when. It absolutely was a ground up original.
