1986 242 Transom question
My 86 has a newr model Silent Thunder swim platform. It is pullung out of the transom. O don't know why yet. I'm really hoping there is no transom rot. If there is... I can't fix myself, about how much cost to repair that. Also I may want to put an origina; wood swim platform back on. is that a big deal to do?

Mine is an 87,but it should be the same. The platform is only held on by four bolts, is it possible the bolts are just lose.

I'm now told the sides od the Transom are getting soft. He wants to replace transom. No price estimate yet. Anyone have idea what that should cost . I can't do any of it myself. Then there is the painting of the transom after repars. I am also looking for an origianl wood swim platform. Thanks

2-3 grand is a guess. The motors come out, transom assemblies of, everything mounted to the transom removed. Then cut out all the glass and old wood and put in new. It is a big project.

It looks like, from another transom rebuild thread, that the outside stays intact and so should not need to be repainted. Does that sound correct to anyone? I really wish I had the time and ability to do myself but I don't and can't.

Shekmark, yes the work is done on the inside. Old transom wood/interior glass is removed down to clean fiberglass hull, the new wood transom is then glassed in and clamped in place while the resin sets up. If done correctly, the exterior of the transom will look the same after the job is done meaning exterior repainting/gel/glasswork is not required.

I was a paying member. I guess it expired! looks like the biggest issue with my transom is that the top bolts needed more support on the inside. They are going to replace two small backing plates with two larger ones and may add two more to center area. These Silent Thunder platforms are apparenty very heavy and fill with water making it much more heavy. Thanks for all thye advice. Very happy to see that its not rotting out!
