Nose Cones on my 311 TRS Drives
I have a debate/bet going on with my good buddy Hollowpoint regarding the existing nose cones that are on my TRS drives.
The boat (as most of you know) is a '88 311, 420 TRS with 502 MPIs having replaced the 420s.
The run that we did this past weekend was rough on the boat. I don't think she was been run this hard in years if ever (she did great btw!), and the work that was done to sculpt the Bravo nose cones onto the drives has started to come apart. I have a few areas of Bondo that have completely come off, and it looks like I'll need to remove it all and redo the work in order to get them looking and functioning correctly.
Here's my dilemma:
My research on nose cones (particularly with the 311 and TRS drives) says that they're a waste on anything under 80 MPH, and that they can actually be a speed killer on this boat. There's $50 riding on this. I think I'll gain a little speed taking the nose cones off, but he thinks I'll lose 3 MPH. If nothing changes, it's a wash. I'm running 67-68 with 27P Mirage's turning 4600 (I'm over-propped a little).
What do you guys think?

Mine was the exact same speed running with and with out them. SOO I guess not a speed killer but don't help either. With that in mind they look cool when they are on there but once they start to chip and flake, and they always do, they look like hell. Mine was a 420 set up as well.

I decided to leave the nose cones on. I removed the cracking filler and redid everything yesterday. After the season is over, I'm going to redo the lowers off the boat. The job is did is "okay" but wouldn't have come out better working on a table.
