Ideas welcome-382Fastech with big power
I would like to see my 2001 382 Fastech run mid 90's. What kind of power and drives would this take? Presently have 500 efi's. I've lost 2 drives already so I'm sure the stock drives need to be replaced. Thinking I might be better off to simply buy a boat that already does mid 90's and sell the Formula rather than rerigging. I could care less about amenities so a different boat should weigh less. I am looking for a first class set-up. I welcome your ideas.

As much as I hate to say it then I would have to say if ammenaties are not your bag you may want to take a look at a Outerlimits. There is a cat up in Maine that is running a 37 with 850's and #6 drives and he is running well into the 115 range at last check. I seem to recall some one saying that he was getting 122!!!!! That is honking for that kind of power. So you can back off to smaller motors and have a BULLIT PROOF set up. They are expensive however. You could also take your engines and put Prochargers or Whipples on them and XR drives and be fairly reliable and probably be getting what you are looking for.

Your 500 efi's are great candidats for whipples. We have seen over 700 HP out of this set up. It is extremely reliable in that you keep your efi technology. Feel free to call me with any questions, as certain things need to be done to make this set up work correctly.

Running hard when perhaps I should have ran easier. Perhaps getting a little more air than I needed to. To me this what running offshore in the Altantic Ocean is all about...naturally had I kept the boat on the Chesepeake Bay probably would have broke nothing.

My buddy has a 2002 382 with Teague 800's and Teague Platinum XR Drives with ext. boxes. Boat tops out at 100 on the dime. Drives have half a season on them and now require rebuild due to excessive gear wear.
If you go to Whipples you should get around 750hp. This should put you into the 90's. If you are concerned about reliability you will also need to change heads (per Dustin Whipple), and that can put the total price of just the motor upgrade to over $20,000.
I own a 2000 382 Formula with HP500EFI and have decided to sell or trade in the boat for one that will run mid 90's out of the box. Upgrades can be fun or they can be hell and if things dont go just right ( blown up drives etc...) they can be a financial pain in the ass.
I have bought a ticket to the Miami boat show to find my next boat.
