Formula 302
I am looking at a 1984 302,It has twin 330 hp,and King Cobra outdrives,340 hrs. The engines have fresh carbs and Edelbrock performer intakes. There are two cracks in the fiberglass, one on each side of the upper surface of the hull near the fwd edge of the engine hatch. The cracks look like they have been there for a long time and are not miagrating. What other areas to check for cracking? If the engines are in good shape what top speed should I get? How strong are King Cobras,I have TRS on my Magnum and its tough as balls. What is the ride like in the rough,Im on lake Huron and the water gets rough. The overall condition is very good to excellent for the year.It comes on a home built but very well made tripple axle trailer.Any ideas of worth,I know its hard to guess but go by my brief description. The guy is broke and wants $22,000 Canadian or around 16,000US. Thanx for any input .......Andy.....

The general consensus it the king cobras are as strong or stronger than Bravos. Keep good oil in the drives and they shouldn't have any trouble with the 330's. I haven't found any cracks in my 86. I have only had it for a couple weeks though. The ride is unbelievable.

Andy I have a 1979. I LOVE the boat. I have driven LOTS of boats and the 302's are one of the hidden gems that no one seems to know about. Places I would check are the transom. Make sure it is good and solid. Also check the stringers. Some other areas are the deck for cracks. The older boats can get stress crachs. Rarely are they more then cosmetic as they laid the gell coat on back then a little to thick. I would have the boat surveyed and offer him 15 grand US.

It's my understanding, and I've been wrong before, that the 302 is likely to get spider cracks. Nothing to worry about structurally(sp?) though. They are a BIG 30' boat, and do a nice job in rough water. From your discription, after you buy it, you should go to church and beg forgiveness for stealing it.

OH ya and expect a HONEST 55mph out of the boat. I get 60 out of mine occasionally but I have done a LOT of mods.

UMMMMM were to begin:
Replaced the transom and stringers in the engine bay.
Painted the engine bay
Put on Teague Tips were the originals were
drives
rebuilt gimbals
engines
K-planes
filled in the port holes and painted the entire hull
worked the bottom a bit
Currently replacing the windshield and dash and putting in new bolsters. Also external steering. There is more but it would take all day

Hi Andy Rick G. here. Where in Ontario are you I'm in Toronto and boat mostly on Lake Simcoe. The 302 is a well built boat and any cracking would most likely be more cosmetic than structural. The price sounds good. I agree with the idea of offering $15,000 us. With my boat rebiult drives punched out the 454 to 468 changed cams and intakes and put big valves in the oval port heads along with EMI 4 inch exhaust. Before all that I got 58.5 MPH on the GPS. With all the mods I'm hoping to see 65 MPH,but I think I will need to play with the props as now I'm running Mirage plus 25's and I'm told I might be better off with cupped 22's or 23's. Time will tell. Rick G.
