Default The complete 272 thread

Since "groove" wants to start threads on each model, I thought I would help him by starting a thread for the 272 SR-1. Any takers out there?

I'll start this thread with what I own and what I'm planning to do. Maybe someone can chime in with any experiences they have.

First, my 89' 272 is bone stock with twin 7.4 330's. She runs about 64 mph (gps) on fresh water 355' above sea level.
I bought it with 242 hours and she has 263hrs on her now. I am in the process of acquiring a pair of long block Gen IV 454- 420's that I am planning on taking to @ 500 - 550hp each.

Anyone out there re-power thier 272 sr-1? What did you do for re-power?

What kind of mph increases did you see?

How does the 272 handle with say 500 - 600 ponies OR MORE? Any advice would be huge.

So where does one find long block Gen IV 454 420s?

Check the swap section of this site. Matter of fact, there are a pair for sale currently.

Well I'm between hot rodding the 242 or getting something bigger....272, 292, 311 not sure. There's a pair of 500s in the classifieds for 10K...if you get one and I get one...

Right Masi, my engines spend so much time hanging in the air they think they're airplane engines

Mine did have 330s but here's my 625/540s. . Trust me when I say you need good hydraulic streering over 75mph. I've been to the low 80's and when you try to trim up for that extra mph or two it gets real squirrelly . I can retract the tabs fully but have to use some negative trim and keep more boat in the water to go straight. Looking into hyd. steering as we speak
Here's a shot of my upgraded dash too.
