Strange: At our shop we use an oil filter crusher to "crush"
oil filters prior to tossing them into the re-cycle drum. I have seen oil filters explode due to high oil pressure, I have seen cheap oil filters leak from seams and I have seen the element inside the filters fail. I guess it depends on what your opinion is on what constitutes a crushed oil filter. If however, you drop the engine/filter to the depths of the Titanic you may have what I call a crushed oil filter. Also you may want make
sure you are not screwing your oil filters onto the vacu-flush
wast tank, for thats the only vessel on your boat capable of
pulling a vacuum and it still wont crush an OF.

The oil filter actually "sucks up" internally. Collapses internally.
The first indication is the typical Fountain warning horn comes on and the engine starts to miss above about 1500. Once past 1500 or so, the horn comes on and it misses. Check everything and you will find only the oil filter internals collapsed.
I know how strange this seems and I can't figure it out but obviously there is a reason. It has happened 5 times on 3 different boats here.

Not to get you scared but my center 525 on my 2005 47 did the same thing. CMI was standup and fixed for free like they did for you. That lasted about 25 hours and then the motor seized when they leaked real bad the next time. So i got to rebuild the motor and buy new headers.
That sux.
I wonder how the Stellings are holding up?????????????

Just spoke to one of the Fountain boys about the problom,\
he was "un-aware" of any of these type of probloms. However, he did say that on the 08 models Merc is installing
what he calls a "COOL COLLAR" somewhere on the header?
That is as definative as he got>

Joe Blair at Pro Tec Marine in Orange Beach, Al (google for #) can fill anyone in on this problem. He is hard to reach since he is so busy but he will call back if you leave word. He has been dealing with this.

Wix oil filters<br />...&Submit=Search
Above is for a Fram HP-6 app.
I don't know what the P/N is for a 525 but the T-10 media I highly favor.
Advanced Performance Oil Filters use a media (T-10) that is rated at a Frazier Air Flow of approximately 267 CFM and is wire backed. The unique wire backing provides a very stable base for a media blend of fiberglass, polyester and cellulose. This media is resistant to high temperatures and water levels in the oil that can plug standard media types. Advanced Performance Media (T-10) is designed to provide a high positive oil flow with low restriction.
These are the Wix recommended oil filters for maximum horsepower increase, to be used primarily on concrete or asphalt tracks.
