Looking at a 42 Lightning
Went to look at a local 42 Lightning. The boat was a little dirty, but the seller said he was not using it this year and not too much last year either. The cover was very dirty or mildewed. The windshield had a little bend in it as if somebody used it to climb in, but not that bad. Maybe a one inch bend from where it should be. The swim ladder was about to fall off, just loose screws. The antenna mount was out of adjustment, so the thing fell against the hull every so often. The cabin door prop rod was shot. The batteries were dead. The engine oil was black. The drive oil had a burnt smell. There was oil in the bilge and a puddle under the drive reservoir. So we go for a test ride after a jump start during which time the jumper cables are touched together while still attached to the engines, creating a cool big spark. So here we go. As we accelerated to about 5000 rpm, the right engine went into neutral. A drive coupler broke, the mechanic later told me. Doesn't it just make you want to cry. AND THE SELLER IS FIRM!

And it is not that the seller is a bad guy. He is not. He just does not seem to be into wrench turning or trying to find the best oil filter. Like many of us, he owes too much on his loan. Throw in today's economy, gas prices, and boat values and there you are. Guess I will keep looking.
