Default 2000 38' Lightning -- How hard to remove bow rails?

Seems I've gotten some mixed reviews. How hard is it to actually remove the bow rails from a 38' Lightning? Someone had mentioned having to cut some holes to even get to them. Anyone actually done it? Is this an MFer?
