A buddy of mine had 650hp 502 with 250 blowers in his 38 straight bottom cig. It did 69-71mph.

My non stepped 38 with SSM drives and 800's, runs a tick under 90mph. These old hulls take some power to run honest good speed numbers.

Also, my 1990 38 is dry as a bone hull wise. But yes, any older boats you need to check for rot. I've seen it on fountains, cigarettes, formulas and donzis.
Yes, rot is not limited to Fountains!

My single step 97 29 Fountian with twin 502 EFIs and 250 blowers (4 lbs boost) going thru XRs would run a top speed of 93. Typical numbers though are around 89 with a full load and fuel tank topped off. I typically run Bravo 1 32p props but have run labbed 30p before as well but lose some top end. I just did a full rebuild on my engines to 509s due to low compression (engines had about (360 hours) but have not yet put them back in and run them. Not sure on the HP numbers because I have never had them dynoed.
