I've been watching it Tom and have held off making a post while I consider the options. So often the long range weather turns out to be off a bit. I payed CJ's a visit last night and they will accommodate us if we are to move the event up a day or go to the next day. Later today I will be able to get the NOAA weather for Friday. If we change the date we will lose some and if we hold the date we may lose some so it's a hard decision. One weather site says high 70's and a 30% chance of showers. As many here in FL know a 30% chance of showers might well mean no showers where we might be. Based on the information available so far we will keep the run date for New Years Day while we continue to monitor it.
I will give an update later this evening.

Default Thursday / Friday Weather

The Weather Channel:

Isolated T-Storms High 75° POP 30%

NOAA National Weather Service Marine Weather:

Zone Forecast: Coastal waters from Chokoloskee to Bonita Beach FL out 20 NM (GMZ656)

Last Update: 206 PM EST SUN DEC 27 2009

Wednesday Night...Southeast winds 8 to 13 knots. Seas 2 to 3 feet. Bay and inland waters a light chop. Slight chance of showers.

Thursday...Southwest winds 6 to 11 knots. Seas 2 feet or less. Bay and inland waters a light chop. Slight chance of showers.

Thursday Night...West winds 5 to 7 knots. Seas 2 feet or less. Bay and inland waters smooth. Slight chance of showers.

Friday...Southwest winds 11 to 16 knots. Seas 2 to 3 feet building to 3 to 5 feet. Bay and inland waters a moderate chop. Chance of showers.

We will need to make a decision by Monday night on whether we hold the event New Years Day or move it ahead to Thursday. The forecast right now indicates that Thursday is a much better day weather wise. It appears that the front arrives sometime on Friday and the wind and seas will be picking up as well as an increase in the chance of rain. We will continue to monitor the weather and if there is no improvement in the forecast during the day tomorrow ( Monday ), then the event will be moved ahead to Thursday. If the run is on Thursday we will start at 11:00 AM and try to have things wrapped up on Marco by 2:30 or 3 pm latest so it will not interfere with New Years Eve plans.
Lets see what tomorrow brings and I will make an announcement by 6 PM on Monday. I will try to contact everyone that I have contact info for.
Bob

Default New Years Day fun run changed to Thursday, Dec 31st.

The most recent weather forecasts continue to indicate a cold front arriving in SW Florida during the day Friday. With winds forecast out of the Northwest at up to 19 knots we at FMO have made a decision to move the run forward to Thursday, Dec. 31st with an 11:00 AM start from the Sanibel Bridge. Please note a change in the start time from 11:30 to 11:00 AM. We would like to be finished up by 2:30 or 3 PM at the latest so everyone can then get on with their New Years eve plans. The weather Thursday is forecast to be much better with only a slight chance of showers, light winds, seas 2 ft or less and a balmy 80 degrees. We really feel it is the right thing to do so that we can have an enjoyable day on the water. We regret any inconvenience this may cause but hope that all will understand that we have no control over the weather.
If you can, please let me know if you are still able to attend or not so we can give CJ's an approximate head count. I will make every effort to contact those that have indicated they will be attending the run and advise them of this change.
Thank you,
Bob
