Default Roll Call / Info for FMO Charity Fun Run to Useppa Island - Sat. Jan. 29th

Our fun run to Useppa Island will take place on Saturday Jan. 29th. You may read about Useppa Island by clicking on this link: http://www.useppa.com/indexb.html
Please note that this is a change from the originally scheduled run to Parrot Key at FMB. We will attend Parrot Key at another time when we are having a smaller event. Parrot Key was unable to provide our group with a desgnated area that could accomodate all of us at this time. This event is one of two fund raisers we have each year to help finance our Ft. Myers Offshore, Inc. student scholarship program. If you are planning on attending this event please let me know by Wednesday Jan 26th by phone - 239-776-0481, e mail - bobthebuilder(at)rogers.blackberry.net or by posting on this event thread on Offshoreonly
Attending Captains should read this information carefully to minimize any confusion.
As in past fund raising events there will be an entry fee of $100.00 per boat. You will be eligible for a charitable tax receipt since we are a registered 501 (c) (3) charity. The preferred method of payment is a check made out to FMO, Inc. or alternatively cash. Payment will be collected at the lunch stop.
Each Captain will receive a set of poker cards and an opportunity to win up to $500.00. Please see details below under the Blackjack Poker heading. As well, our fund raising efforts will involve an additional Blackjack poker game open to everyone and we will again be selling our FMO tee shirts and hats.
Come out and have a great day on the water with your friends at FMO and lets show our support for worthy students entering university / college or other institute of higher learning in Lee and Collier Counties. ( Please read our mission statement http://www.ftmyersoffshore.org ) We were able to award 3 scholarships again last year and with your help hope to improve upon that this year.

Membership Renewal:

If you have not yet joined or renewed your membership for 2011, you may do so on our website and pay using Pay Pal, join / renew at the lunch stop or alternatively download the form and mail it in. There is no change in membership fees. Your membership will be good through until the end of 2011. Go to www.ftmyersoffshore.org If you are a current member we will only need basic information as it is already on file unless there have been changes. People tell me all the time what a great thing FMO has going on here and it can only continue if you continue to show your support for your club.

Route:

Our starting point will once again be the south side of the Sanibel Bridge. Boats should assemble around 10:45 am and we will leave by 11:00 AM sharp.
We will be in two groups, according to speed. With 10 knot winds out of the NW forecast Friday night, we will all ( both groups ) get a better boating experience by going up the protected Intra Coastal Waterway (ICW) to Useppa Island tomorrow. On departure we will head for the inside of Sanibel Island and pass under the raised portion of the causeway closest to Sanibel Island and into the ICW. After we have idled under the bridge the pace boats may be passed and you can set your own safe speed. Remember to be considerate of other boaters using the ICW. Anyone wanting to run offshore in the Gulf may do so on the way home or take the ICW, their choice as the official organized part of the run is over once we are at Ueppa Island. Have fun and above all boat safely.

Alec Cloke will act as the pace boat in his black 43' Nor Tech, and will start the slower group ( 50 - 55 MPH ) first. Jay will be on board so be sure to pass within a quarter mile away so he can get a good running shot of your boat. This group should assemble farthest from the bridge.
I will act as the pace boat for the faster group and we will mill in an area closer to the causeway / bridge. We will make our start about 5 minutes or so after the first group has left. At some point the faster group will catch and pass Alec and as we do so, try to come within camera range for Jay as mentioned above.

Fuel / Distance:

From the Sanibel Bridge to Useppa Island and back should be about 70 miles by way of the ICW both ways. South Seas Resort which is in the ICW along the way has 89 octane fuel. 93 octane is very difficult to find these days so please leave with a full tank.

Food:

We will be eating at the Useppa Island Club. I will post the menu and prices prior to the run, once I have sorted it out with Jasmyn.

Blackjack Poker:

FMO board member Joe Rutter has again agreed to organize a couple of Blackjack poker games. One game will be restricted to the boat Captains only, so one or more of them will go home with all or some of the $500.00 Captain's prize money. Captains will be issued playing cards on payment of their $ 100.00 entry fee and can be paid by cash or check. There will be another game that will be open to ALL attendees at the lunch that are of age. Cards in that game will be $25.00 per hand. Half of the sales will become prize money and the other half will go towards FMO's student scholarship program. Joe will have a set of rules that will govern the poker games and will be printed and available at our lunch at Useppa Island. We recieved very positive feedback from the November Blackjack event with most people finding it a lot of fun and enjoying it. The one crtisizm we did receive was that it needs to move along faster and we are addressing that this time around. If any attendees are familiar with Blackjack and want to help, please see Joe Rutter.

Communication:

Inter boat communication to be on VHF channel 72. My cell number is 239 776 0481. Anyone dropping out after the start should let me know so we do not spend time either waiting or looking for you. Leave a voicemail if no answer.

Pictures:

Club photographer Jay Nichols ( Jayboat ) will be aboard Alec Cloke's 43 Nor Tech CC and will capture as many pictures of your boats as possible during the coarse of the day. Please be sure to pass by Alec's boat for your picture. Jay will have a display at Useppa Island and prints may be ordered directly from him for this or past events. His cell is 941 276 5650 or e mail: [email protected] As always after each run, Jay will post his pictures up on OSO and I will provide links so you can view them.

Default Useppa Island, FL

Useppa Island is a rare and special place. Check out Useppa Island by clicking on this link: http://www.useppa.com/indexb.html Many of us were disappointed when it did not work out for us to go there on the Thanksgiving weekend run. Fortunately it has worked out for them to host us on our Jan 29th fun run. They will likely offer us golf cart tours of the island as they have in the past or at the very least you should go for a walk on one of the many trails and see why Useppa is so special. The pictures I have posted below were taken by me on a Poker Runs America event in 2004. Don't worry, we will not have a raft up of boats that large on this event. Dockage is plentiful and little or no rafting will be required. That is club member John Mattaliano and his wife in picture number 3. Enjoy.

Bob,

I am in, and so is Jim in his 30 Skater LS7. I will maintain and post the boat list shortly.

For those coming from Charlotte Harbor, we have a very low time Sat morning 2011-01-29 7:37 AM EST -0.48 feet Low Tide. This means you will most likely not be able to get you boat off you lift, plan accordingly. Jim and I, are each putting our boats into the water Fri afternoon.

The basic route, is below. Please remember what Bob said regarding "a wide sweep around the bottom end of Sanibel Island" and "not cut this corner either, staying outside the Johnson Shoals"

See you all Sat
